Nationale Opera & Ballet is een van de grootste Nederlandse culturele organisaties en bevindt zich in het hart van Amsterdam. De functie van directeur Techniek & Ateliers speelt een centrale rol in zowel de realisatie van onze producties als de ontwikkeling van de technische organisatie en de ateliers.

Over de functie

Als directeur Techniek & Ateliers ben je eindverantwoordelijk voor alle technische afdelingen en ateliers, waar circa 240 fte (ongeveer 40% van de organisatie) en een wisselend aantal flexibele krachten werkzaam zijn. Je geeft direct leiding aan de afdelingshoofden binnen het technische en ambachtelijke domein: decoratelier, kostuumatelier opera, kostuumatelier ballet, rekwisieten, kap & grime, toneeltechniek, belichting, AV/Multimedia, onderhoudsdienst toneeltechniek, facilitair & gebouw.

Je richt je op het creëren van de juiste randvoorwaarden, heldere kaders en een sterke onderlinge samenwerking, zodat de afdelingen optimaal kunnen bijdragen aan de realisatie van opera- en balletproducties. Daarbij houd je strategisch overzicht over zowel lopende producties als de voorbereiding van toekomstige seizoenen. Hierbij heb je oog voor de balans tussen artistieke ambities en technische uitvoerbaarheid, en draag je bij aan een goede samenwerking van jouw afdelingen met de artistieke teams.

De breedte van dit werkveld, van ambachtelijke ateliers tot gebouwbeheer en geavanceerde podiumtechniek, vraagt om visie op vakmanschap en op ontwikkelingen in het werkveld. Je zorgt ervoor dat deze disciplines zichzelf blijven uitdagen en ontwikkelen, en nieuwe methoden en technieken integreren in hun werkwijze.

Deze rol vraagt om helder leiderschap. Je brengt samenhang en structuur en zorgt voor duidelijke rollen en effectieve samenwerking. Daarbij stuur je ook op doelmatige inzet van middelen en een efficiënte inrichting van de organisatie.

Je bent als directeur Techniek & Ateliers lid van het directieteam van Nationale Opera & Ballet. Je opereert op strategisch niveau en vertaalt de artistieke koers van Nationale Opera & Ballet naar een goed functionerende en toekomstbestendige technische organisatie. En omgekeerd breng je inzichten vanuit Techniek & Ateliers naar de directietafel, en beïnvloed je daarmee de besluitvorming en strategie voor Nationale Opera & Ballet.

Je rapporteert aan de algemeen directeur. Gegeven de aard van de functie werk je ook nauw samen met de directeur van De Nationale Opera en de directeur van Het Nationale Ballet.

• Je bent ambitieus, volgt technologische ontwikkelingen op de voet en weet deze te vertalen naar concrete toepassingen binnen het theater.
• Je bent flexibel in werktijden wanneer het werk daarom vraagt en begrijpt dat je vaak aanwezig moet zijn in de avonduren en weekends.
• Als Nederlands niet je eerste taal is, heb je tenminste al enige basis in het Nederlands en ben je in staat en bereid om deze snel te ontwikkelen tot het niveau dat nodig is om dagelijks effectief met medewerkers op alle niveaus te communiceren. Daarnaast is het belangrijk dat je vloeiend Engels spreekt.

The role of Director of Technical Operations & Production Workshops plays a central role in both the realization of our productions and the development of our technical organization and workshops.

About the role

As Director of Technical Operations & Production Workshops, you are ultimately responsible for all technical departments and workshops, comprising approximately 240 FTE (around 40% of the organization) as well as a varying number of freelance staff. You directly manage the heads of departments within the technical and craft domains: set construction workshop, opera costume workshop, ballet costume workshop, props, hair & make-up, stage engineering, lighting, AV/multimedia, stage engineering maintenance, and facilities & building management.

You focus on creating the right conditions, clear frameworks, and strong collaboration, enabling departments to optimally contribute to the realization of opera and ballet productions. You maintain a strategic overview of both ongoing productions and preparations for future seasons, balancing artistic ambitions with technical feasibility, and fostering effective collaboration between your departments and the artistic teams.

The breadth of this field, from artisanal workshops to building management and advanced stage technology, requires a clear vision on craftsmanship and developments within the sector. You ensure that these disciplines continue to challenge and develop themselves, integrating new methods and techniques into their ways of working.

This role requires clear leadership. You bring cohesion and structure, ensure clarity in roles, and promote effective collaboration. You also focus on the efficient use of resources and an effective organizational setup.

As Director of Technical Operations & Production Workshops, you are a member of the executive team of Dutch National Opera & Ballet. You operate at a strategic level, translating the artistic direction of the organization into a well-functioning and future-proof technical organization. Conversely, you bring insights from the technical departments to the executive level, influencing decision-making and strategy.

You report to the General Director. Given the nature of the role, you will also work closely with the Director of Dutch National Opera and the Director of Dutch National Ballet.

About you

• You have a strong technical foundation and understand the dynamics of theatre technology and the performing arts, or a similarly complex production environment.
• You have an affinity with artistic processes and are a strong dialogue partner for artistic teams and department heads.
• You are highly skilled in organizing work: you manage planning, capacity, and budgets, ensuring structure and clarity even under pressure.
• You build sustainable working relationships and know how to guide people through developments and change.
• You are ambitious, stay up to date with technological developments, and translate them into practical applications within the theatre.
• You are flexible in working hours when required and understand that evening and weekend presence is often necessary.
• If Dutch is not your first language, you have at least a basic command of Dutch and are able and willing to quickly develop it to a level that allows effective daily communication across all levels of the organization. Fluency in English is essential.
• Experience in the theatre sector, particularly in opera and ballet, is highly desirable.
